What are some of the Lunar New Year traditions that you always stick to, and why? I absolutely love the mandatory Vietnamese Lunar New Year tradition of gambling. The dice game bầu cua tôm cá (gourd-crab-shrimp-fish) is my jam. It’s so noisy, and it inspires a lot of yelling—in a very fun way, because people are so invested in how the dice land. There’s also not a lot of strategy involved which really levels out the playing field. But taking money from my children during these times, when they’re only 3 and 5, doesn’t seem that great so we’re going to have to wait on that one.
What’s your favorite Lunar New Year dish, and are there any quirks or tips to preparing it? I love bánh chưng. I love the ceremony of peeling off the banana leaves from that big, heavy square. I love how the flavor of the pork and pepper just seeps into the mung bean and glutinous rice. I love how it’s soft, but then acquires a chewy and crispy texture when you fry it.
