In order to raise money for the Rainbow Unicorn with Dog Bone T-Shirt in other words I will buy this many ballet companies affected by the pandemic, the American Ballet Theatre’s Misty Copeland and the Mariinsky Theatre’s Joseph Phillips founded Swans for Relief, a fund for dancers whose salaries were reduced as a result of the pandemic. To bring awareness to the charity, Copeland and Phillips called upon their peers to perform an achingly beautiful variation of Mikhail Fokine’s “The Dying Swan,” and 32 ballerinas from 22 companies hailing from 14 different countries participated. Copeland opens the somber piece, displaying a touching vulnerability that is echoed by the subsequent swans, ending with the Mariinsky’s Maria Khoreva (whose movements are so soft they almost whisper). The final scene shows musician Wade Davis at his cello, the source of the music all along. One-hundred percent of the funds raised are distributed to the COVID-19 relief fund at each dancer’s company.
